San José airport car rental tax
San José airport is applying a charge of 12% on rental cars at the airport. This is not being applied uniformly by rental car agencies. Not all agencies apply it for clients who are picked up at the airport. All agencies take you to nearby airport agency branches 5 minutes away, where you collect your car.
As you risk paying 12% extra on your whole rental bill (which could be for your entire stay in Costa Rica), this is a punitive charge best avoided.
How to avoid the tax!
1) Use a rental agency that picks you up at the airport without charging the 12%:-

2) Take a taxi at the airport to the car rental agency 5 minutes away (cost around $10).
